What is the difference between Amazon ASIN and SKU?

1. SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

SKU is the basic unit for measuring the inventory in and out of goods. It is composed of numbers or letters, or a mixture of the two. SKU can generally be written by the seller himself. When a product has different colors, sizes, etc., there are multiple SKUs. For example, if a piece of clothing comes in three colors: black, red, and yellow, and each color has three sizes: S, M, and L, then this piece of clothing has a total of 9 SKUs.

Amazon does not have strict requirements on the rules for writing SKUs. When sellers list products, they can fill in the 'SKU' column themselves. If they do not fill it in, the Amazon system will automatically assign it. However, in order to facilitate future product management, sellers are advised to compile SKUs based on their own management habits or product characteristics.

The SKU code is not displayed on the front end. If different sellers sell the same product, the SKU will also be different. Sellers can edit product quotes through the store backend and click in to view the SKU.

2.ASIN code

The ASIN code is automatically generated by the Amazon system and does not need to be added by the seller. The ASIN code is equivalent to a unique product ID and is unique on the Amazon platform. One ASIN code corresponds to one SKU. ASIN codes can be used to query products on the platform front end and the seller’s store back end.

The ASIN code is displayed on the product details page, usually in "Product Details" or "Product Information".

So will the ASIN code change with the seller like the SKU code? Generally speaking, when the seller publishes the product details page for the first time, the ASIN code will not change even if the product details page is adjusted and modified later. However, when the product detail page created by the seller is the same as that of other sellers on the platform and the description is similar, the product detail page may be automatically merged by Amazon and the ASIN code will also change.
