On December 21, it was learned from the website of the China (Hangzhou) Cross-border E-Commerce Comprehensive Pilot Zone that according to foreign media reports, local legislators in New York, USA are drafting a proposal that will impose an additional tax of US$3 per package on all online orders delivered to New York customers.
It is reported that the reason for the tax is that the epidemic has reduced the revenue of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). In addition, epidemic prevention work has also added a lot of additional costs. Currently, the MTA is facing a huge deficit.
It is reported that the bill is currently on the legislative agenda. If the bill is passed, it is expected to bring the MTA about US$1 billion in revenue each year.
The financial results released by the United States Postal Service for the fiscal year (October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2018) showed that during the reporting period, the U.S. Postal Service's operating revenue was US$73.1 billion and its net loss was US$9.2 billion. Affected by the epidemic, the U.S. Postal Mail business volume dropped significantly throughout the year, with first-class mail decreasing by 2.3 billion pieces, a decrease of 4.2%; marketing mail decreased by 11.5 billion pieces, a decrease of 15.2%.
Data shows that the U.S. Postal Service package volume increased by nearly 1.2 billion pieces compared to last year, an increase of 18.8%. The pace of growth in parcel volumes has slowed since peaking in the early fourth quarter of last year.
