What is an Amazon SKU? What are the coding rules for Amazon SKU? Let’s take a look with the editor today!
What is an Amazon SKU?
SKU is the abbreviation of Stock Keeping Unit, which means SKU refers to the unit of measurement of inventory in and out. This unit can be piece, box, pallet, etc. In simple terms, in the retail industry, SKU code and quantity are used to manage the total goods. The use of SKU can better manage the inventory system.
Take clothes as an example. If a piece of clothing comes in three colors: white, red and blue, and in three sizes: S, M and L, then this piece of clothing will have 9 SKU codes. The SKU code can be composed of numbers, letters, or a combination of the two.
SKU refers to a product, and each product has a SKU to facilitate e-commerce brands to identify products. When a product has multiple attributes such as different colors, sizes, etc., there are multiple SKUs. For example, if a piece of clothing comes in three colors: black, white, and gray, and each color has different sizes: S, M, L, and XL, then this piece of clothing will have 12 SKUs.
Note: On the Amazon platform, whether you are creating a new product or selling an existing product, you need a corresponding SKU. The SKU in each store is not allowed to be repeated. This is the unique identifier for Amazon sellers to manage products, and ASIN is only the product ID of the Amazon mall for buyers. In the Amazon inventory management list, one ASIN can correspond to multiple SKUs.
Amazon does not have strict requirements on the SKU writing rules. When sellers list products, they can fill in the SKU column themselves. If they do not fill it in, Amazon will automatically generate a SKU code and assign it to you, which will make it difficult to identify. Therefore, in order to facilitate future product management, sellers are advised to compile SKUs according to their own management habits or product characteristics.
Amazon SKU coding rules
When sellers upload products, they must fill in the sku. There are two ways:
1. Sellers give their own product numbers according to their own product management rules and fill in their own sku to facilitate later product management
2. Some sellers may not be familiar with Amazon backend operations. Don’t worry. When uploading products, if you don’t fill in your own sku code, Amazon backend will automatically generate it. However, once there are more product sku codes, it will not be as easy to manage as your own regular coding. So I still recommend the first method.
When writing the SKU code yourself, you need to pay attention to the uniqueness of the SKU, that is, each product is marked with a unique SKU code and cannot be reused, otherwise the inventory will be mixed up. When writing the SKU code, combining the product's letters with the ISBN or UPC is a coding method currently commonly used by sellers on Amazon.
