A domain name is the URL, or website address, through which your customers can find your online store. You can manage your online store's domain settings on the Domains page in your Shopify admin. If you're using the wholesale channel, then you can manage your wholesale store's domain settings on the Domains page in that channel.
By default, your primary domain is examplestore.myshopify.com, but you can purchase additional custom domains or use one you already own.
Adding your domain to Shopify
When you purchase a domain through Shopify, it is automatically configured to use with your primary domain. By default, the primary domain is something like examplestore.myshopify.com. If you want to get a custom URL for your Shopify store, such as www.example.com, then you can add a custom URL to your online store. You can add a custom domain to Shopify in two ways:
If you don't already have your own custom domain, then you can purchase a domain from Shopify.
If you already have a custom domain, then you can use the domain you already own by connecting it to your online store or by transferring domain management to Shopify.
Using a third-party domain
If you already own a domain name from a third-party provider such as GoDaddy or Bluehost, you can use it for your Shopify online store so that people who type your URL into their browser end up going to your website. You can transfer your third-party apps to Shopify, or connect them to Shopify so that you can use them with your Shopify store:
Transfer your domain to Shopify – The first way to point your custom domain to your Shopify store is to transfer the domain. Most domains can be transferred to Shopify. When you transfer a domain, management of the domain moves to Shopify, which means you need to adjust domain settings, pay for the domain, and renew the domain directly in the Shopify admin. If you want to use a third-party domain with Shopify in this way,
Connect your domain to Shopify – You can point your domain to your Shopify store by connecting your third-party domain to Shopify. You will still use your third-party domain provider to manage domain setup, pay for domains, and renew domains.
Set up an existing domain to connect to Shopify
If you have purchased your domain through a third party, you will need to edit the following DNS settings:
Your A record should point to Shopify's IP address, which is 23.227.38.32
Your CNAME record should point to shops.myshopify.com Copy .
Editing these domain settings may affect other things, such as email forwarding. You can contact your domain name provider to find out how any changes may affect your DNS settings.
Note: You can only have one A record associated with your primary domain. If your domain name was already associated with an A record when you edited your DNS settings to point the A record to Shopify's IP address, then delete the old A record.
step:
Log in to your domain provider account.
Find your DNS settings. Look for domain management areas, DNS configurations, or similar.
Edit your A record to point to Shopify's IP address 23.227.38.32
The domain settings panel might contain drop-down menus or editable fields, or you might have to select a check box or edit a table. You need to do the following:
– Enter or select the @ symbol or A record – Enter Shopify's IP address, 23.227.38.32 Copy , as the destination for the A record.
Save the A record (click Save, Save Zone File, Add Record, or similar).
Find the CNAME record in your DNS settings.
Change the www CNAME record to point to shops.myshopify.com Copy . Typically, you only need to provide the prefix without the dot, but with some domain providers, you need to provide the entire subdomain. Use the existing entry as a guide, or follow the provider's instructions. A CNAME record must always point to a domain name, not an IP address.
Save the CNAME record (usually by clicking Save or Add Record or something similar).
Now you need to verify your connection in Shopify.
Verify your connection in Shopify
In your Shopify admin, click Verify Connection to confirm that your custom domain is connected to your store.
Note: It may take up to 48 hours for your custom domain to be pointed to your Shopify store. If you need help or have problems setting up a third-party domain, you can contact the provider.
Connecting subdomains
A subdomain is a subset of the root domain used as a prefix. For example, in the URL shop.johnsapparel.com, shop is a subdomain. The most popular subdomain is www. You can use subdomains to organize your website and make it easier for visitors to find the information they are looking for.
step:
Log in to your domain provider account.
Find your DNS settings. Look for domain management areas, DNS configurations, or similar.
Find the CNAME record in your DNS settings.
Change the subdomain CNAME record to point to shops.myshopify.com Copy . For example, if you want the subdomain shop.johns-apparel.com to point to your Shopify store, change the shop CNAME record to point to shops.myshopify.com Copy:
Subdomain connection
Save the CNAME record (usually by clicking Save or Add Record or something similar).
From your Shopify admin, click Online Store, then click Domains.
Click Connect an existing domain name:
Connect an existing domain
Enter your subdomain in the text field (for example, shop.johns-apparel.com).
Click Next.
In your Shopify admin, click Verify Connection to confirm that your custom domain is connected to your store.
Note: Your root domain will also be added automatically. If you only want to connect a subdomain and not the root domain, you can delete it by clicking the delete icon next to the root domain in the Manage domains section.
Next steps after adding your custom domain to Shopify
After you add your domain in Shopify, you need to choose your primary domain (the domain that customers will see in the address bar when they browse your online store).
After you add your domain to Shopify, you can also set up email forwarding based on your domain.
